Jan Stapel

Jan Stapel served as WAPOR President from 1953-54. In 1981 he was the first person to receive the WAPOR Helen Dinerman Award in recognition of his contribution to public opinion research. At the age of 28, he co-founded NIPO, which today is the largest research company of the Netherlands. Driven by personal interest and entrepreneurial flair, Jan played a key role in introducing political polling to the Netherlands. NIPO became a publicly well known company, the icon for market research by free publicity.

Jan Stapel was active in the development of research methodology and introduced the Staple scale. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam.
